Housing developments, senior facilities and retail centers are among the places in Auburn that its police, fire and ambulance services respond to most frequently, according to a review by 人兽性交.
The use of 911 in the city tends to come up often, so we asked Auburn's emergency service providers to provide their call volume data for the first six months of 2024.
The composition of the data is similar to recent years, city officials said, but the total call volume has been increasing annually. That's because calling 911 is becoming more commonplace, they said.
"We've seen people that 911 is their primary health care provider. They don't have a family doctor," Fire Chief Mark Fritz said. "I know if I dial 911, someone's going to come help me."
人兽性交 sat down with Fritz, Police Chief James Slayton and City Manager Jeff Dygert on Sept. 4 to discuss the data. While some trends and takeaways are obvious, many others are less so.

Most importantly, the city's 911 call volume data consists of more than just 911 calls.
In the case of Auburn police, the data also includes property checks and security details. That's why many city schools and public properties like the downtown parking garage and Mill Street Dam appear high in the department's data, Slayton said. Auburn police have been stationed at more school athletic events lately, he added, after previously sticking to high school basketball games.
Wegmans appears high for the same reason. Each day the department has an officer there is registered in the data, Slayton said. Officers are there Thursdays through Saturdays, so about half of the store's 205 "calls" are actually those officers. A similar detail is located at the corner of State and Perrine streets, site of popular late-night bars聽Swifty's Tavern, Belvedere Lounge and Britches' Dance Bar.
The other 100 or so calls to Wegmans were for retail theft, minor accidents and other incidents that bring police to Auburn Plaza, Walmart and Byrne Dairy on a regular basis as well, Slayton said.
The popular convenience store is one example of what Slayton described as a major influence on the department's emergency response data: the city's Nuisance Abatement Committee. Its efforts to address problems at the property brought the city into contact with Byrne Dairy's ownership. As a result, the company added security cameras and revised employee policy for customer interactions.
"Any of these properties that we look at and find high numbers, we try to get them in and have a conversation," Slayton said. "A lot of them don't know because a lot of them are corporate."
The committee is also the reason for decreasing calls to the Grant Motel and the residence at 13 Rock Ave., the police chief continued.
"I really appreciate what the nuisance board has done," he said.
Many other calls to Byrne Dairy, as well as Speedway on North Street, concern homeless people, Slayton said. The calls often come from employees worried about someone and asking for a welfare check. Because people call 911 instead of more appropriate options like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, the city's police, fire and ambulance services regularly find themselves helping the same people.
"The three services we're talking about have increasingly become almost a social services safety net for the community," Dygert said.

Like Auburn police, the city's fire department commonly responds to housing developments such as Oak Creek Townhomes.
But because the department's responses are more assistive in nature, senior living facilities Northbrook Heights, Stryker Homes, the Edward T. Boyle Center and more also appear high in its data.
Memorial City Hall and Nucor Steel, however, do not appear in the data because the fire department responds to 911 calls there. They appear because Saturday morning inspections of vacant properties are registered under City Hall, Fritz said, and because the department is Nucor's confined space rescue team. Firefighters must be on standby when any maintenance is performed in those spaces.

Unsurprisingly, Auburn City Ambulance's call volume data mostly skews toward medical facilities. The city's hospital is highest due to the transfers to other facilities the service provides, Fritz said.聽
The hospital is also the site of one of the city's three nursing homes, the Finger Lakes Center for Living. The other two, The Commons on St. Anthony and Auburn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, appear in the top five of the ambulance service's data as well. Fritz said those facilities don't appear in the fire department's data because staff can fill the role of immediate response until the ambulance arrives.
A recent addition to the service's data, and the only one outside the city of Auburn, is Sennett Meadows Senior Apartments on Route 20. Auburn City Ambulance has been responding there since AMR ambulance service left the area at the end of last year, Fritz said. It has a clustered population, he continued, like many of the other places the city's emergency services respond to most frequently.
