AUBURN - Maureen E. Burns, a lifelong Auburn resident, passed away Wednesday surrounded by loving family at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, NY.
The youngest daughter of John J. And Anne Morrissey Burns, Maureen had graduated from Auburn High School. Her college education continued with a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education at SUNY Geneseo, and a Masters Degree from SUNY Oswego.
A brilliant teaching career was ahead of her for 30 years at Port Byron Central School. As a Kindergarten Teacher for those 30 years from AA Gates Elementary School. Maureen exemplified the very best in classroom abilities. Always with a gracious warm smile, positive attitude and the unique ability to engage each and every student. She was beloved for her charitable kindness, professional demeanor, with friendships that lasted a lifetime. Maureen was corresponding with many former students in recent weeks.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Auburn, NY. During her retirement Maureen enjoyed traveling, baking for family, friends and neighbors. She was always loved a good shopping trip, and loved decorating for every holiday. Her lifelong love of reading, especially about A. Lincoln connected her to volunteer at the Seward House.
Surviving are her siblings, all from Auburn: Mary Anne Burns Crook (Larry), Timothy M. Burns, Marsha K Burns, John J. Burns, Jr ( Lynne), Richard J. Burns (Cathy), and Deborah B. Murray (John) Auburn.
Many nieces, nephews and several cousins, especially including cousins, Anne Morrissey Bryla and Rita Morrissey Campagnola.
She was predeceased by her parents and infant siblings, Susan, Michael, Mary Anne and Peter.
On April 23, 2025 at St. Mary's Church, Auburn calling hours will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. with Reverend Louis A. Vasile, as celebrant. A private family burial will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
With St. Mary's Church decorated with Easter flowers, the kind omission of additional flowers is requested. Memorials may be remembered to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Leukemia Research Hospital.
Forever to be remembered as "Miss Burns, our favorite Kindergarten Teacher."
