The Buss family has agreed to a deal to sell majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter for approximately $10 billion. The agreement, which is the largest-ever sale for a US sports franchise, will see the Buss family keep a 15% stake in the team for a period of time, according to ESPN. Jeanie Buss will also remain as the Lakers鈥 governor for a 鈥渘umber of years,鈥 a decision that was fully endorsed by Walter. Water, who is the CEO of diversified holding company TWG Global, has been a stakeholder at the Lakers since 2021 after he purchased Phil Anschutz鈥檚 share of 26%. The 65-year-old and his company hold interests in the Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Premier League club Chelsea and the Professional Women鈥檚 Hockey League. Lakers legend Magic Johnson, who is a business partner of Walter鈥檚, took to X to share his excitement about the sale and described the incoming owner as 鈥渘othing short of a winner.鈥 鈥淎 few things I can tell you about Mark 鈥 he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way鈥 I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike -- they are competitive people, have big hearts, love to give back, and both prefer to be behind the scenes. This makes all the sense in the world,鈥 said Magic Johnson. The sale will mark the end of an era in LA, with the Buss family selling the team 46 years since Jerry Buss, father of Jeanie, bought the team from Jack Kent for $67.5 million in 1979. The Lakers have captured a league-best 11 championships under their stewardship since the purchase, which also saw the Buss family acquire NHL side the Los Angeles Kings and the Forum. After Jerry Buss died in 2013, his six children, who鈥檝e approved the sale by majority vote, assumed ownership of the team before Jeanie Buss became controlling owner four years later.
