Bernard Leslie Deering "Bernie", passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 83.
Born on January 30, 1942, in Auburn, New York, Bernie was the cherished son of James and Marion Deering and the proud brother of six siblings.
Bernie was a devoted husband for 57 years to his late wife, Carol Deering, who lovingly referred to him as "Butch". Their love story began in the 7th grade in Auburn, where they became inseparable companions. Together, they built a beautiful family, and Bernie was a loving father to Sean (the late Lisa), Connor (Heather), Jimmy (Lisa), and Brian (Regan) Deering. He was also a beloved grandpa, affectionately known as "Buppa," to his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Bernie found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, whether it was enjoying a day on the lake or watching hockey, football, or baseball.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Bernie served in the U.S. Army with the Big Red One, 1st Infantry Division. He carried the values of honor and loyalty throughout his life, both in service and in his personal relationships. Professionally, Bernie dedicated over 35 years to the Sugar and Corn Wet Milling Industries, working in various states including New York, Connecticut, Iowa, and Illinois.
Bernie will be remembered fondly by family and friends as an honest, loyal, and loving husband, father, brother, grandpa "Buppa", uncle, and friend. His warmth and kindness touched the lives of many.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Schmitt Deering; his parents, James and Marion Deering; his brothers, James and Peter Deering; his sisters, Alma Sedor and Judy Sheftic; and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Macdonald Deering.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, June 13th, from 3:00 PM until the Prayer Service at 5:00 PM at Sullivan Funeral Home, located at 60 South Grant St., Hinsdale, IL. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Folds of Honor: .
