Dr. Margaret Spinosa, of Baldwinsville, started at the hospital in June as a member of its gastroenterology team at 1 Park Ave. She鈥檚 also a graduate of Syracuse University, and her father is a native of Port Byron.聽

鈥淚 was born and raised here, so Auburn is near and dear to my heart," Spinosa said in a news release. "I have enjoyed getting to know the hospital community."

Spinosa completed her medical education at the University of Nebraska before interning at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in internal medicine and completing a gastroenterology fellowship at Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania.聽

CEO Scott Berlucchi said the hospital strives to employ "hometown heroes" like Spinosa.聽

鈥淚t means a lot to the people we serve to have highly respected and talented physicians on staff who are from Central New York, and live in our Auburn Community,鈥� Berlucchi said.聽

As part of the Auburn Gastroenterology team of physicians and health care professionals, Spinosa will also work with the new Upstate Cancer Center at the hospital.聽

The hospital鈥檚 chief medical officer, Jamie Syrett, said having both units near each other is convenient for patients, both for treatment and prevention.聽

"Gastroenterology is one field of discipline that's incredibly pivotal and important in colon cancer screening,鈥� Syrett said.聽

Spinosa encourages individuals to get screened for colon cancer, even if they are asymptomatic.聽

鈥淵ou can have this dreaded disease and not even know it,鈥� she said.聽

Additionally, the new physician said she is happy to serve the Auburn community and is pleased with the support and positivity she is experiencing at the hospital.聽

鈥淚'm honored to give back in this way, to a community that gave so much to me," Spinosa said. "I come to work every day excited to get started."
