Nestled between homes on the corner of North Division and Seymour streets on the upper west side of Auburn is Custom听Cleaners & Tailors, which was established in 1947 by听Karl and Natalie Stadniuk.
Their son, ThomasStadniuk, and his wife, Vachelle, traded their careers as a government researcher in plant pathology and a special education teacher, respectively, to join his parents in runningthe dry cleaning business听in 1982. They retired a few years later, leaving Thomas and Vachelle to take over.听
A young Thomas worked at Custom Cleaners & Tailors beginning in grade school. In its early days, the shop was surrounded by Italian, Ukrainian and Polish families.听An abundance of manufacturing businesses and about 10 other dry cleaners dotted the area. The competition was stiff.
Today, most of that manufacturing is gone and there are only two dry cleaners left. The market has been shrinking due to a decrease in business and dress attire, made worse by COVID-19.听But the Stadniuks continue to thrive through long hours, hard work and a small, loyal crew that offers a high level of customer care.
What does the future hold for the Stadniuks? Their two children no longer live in the area, and have expressed no interest in the business.
鈥I have no plans to retire,鈥 Thomas, 74, told 人兽性交. 鈥淚t's a labor of love.鈥
