Following a massive fire that destroyed businesses and displaced residents in Ovid on Tuesday, a donation site has been set up at Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius.
Violet Wednesday, a bake shop in the food court of the mall, has been designated an official United Way of Seneca County site for donations of clothing, food and more, the mall said in a news release.
The shop has extended its hours to 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Jan. 28 to accommodate donations. It is recommended donors use the east or west Track Cinema entrance for the shortest walk.
The shop is owned by聽Tara Van Wormer, a farmer in Romulus.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to all who step forward to support our neighbors during this difficult time," she said in the news release.
Fire departments from Cayuga County assisted with the response to a major fire in a Seneca County village, where four buildings were destroyed and up to 20 residents were displaced.聽
The fire began at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in an apartment over the Big M supermarket in the Seneca County town. It destroyed that building along with three others. No injuries were reported.
Hundreds of firefighters responded to the blaze, including ones from Cayuga County. They did not leave the scene until 5 a.m.
