When Tom Galbato started advocacy group Curb Alcohol Related Mortalities in 1979, the intent was to one day make the group obsolete.
CARM came to be after the death of Galbato's wife Carmella, 38, who was killed that July when she was hit by a drunk driver along the side of East Lake Road in Owasco near Galbato's family restaurant, Tom Thumb Drive-In.
During its existence, CARM sponsored educational workshops against drunk driving, presented $250 scholarships to graduating Auburn High School seniors with the Students Against Drunk Driving program and worked with other area awareness groups, according to archival records.
"Our goal is for CARM not to be needed, that the next generation will be educated to the problem of drinking and driving," Galbato said back in 1989.
Nearly 37 years later, though, CARM's work continues.

Donations are still collected for CARM at Tom Thumb's front counter. Galbato, now 80, said the group awarded $250 scholarships this year to two graduating Auburn High School students, while he still hands out booklets, calendars and other materials related to curbing drunk driving.
Decades removed from his wife's death, Galbato said he's relived memories of the incident after two weeks ago 鈥 with authorities as a contributing factor.
Police said 18-year-old Chloe Calhoun had just left the Tom Thumb parking lot in an SUV when she was struck from behind by a northbound vehicle. Calhoun died of her injuries at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
Following Calhoun's death, 33-year-old Dain Schneider, of Owasco, was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated. Additional charges .

Newspaper clippings detail Tom Galbato's advocacy work through Curb Alcohol Related Mortalities.
Galbato said he was at the Tom Thumb Drive-In when the accident happened. The resulting debris, he estimated, spread about 150 feet down the roadway 鈥 Galbato still occasionally finds parts when he goes to get his mail.
"I am never going to forget the noise," he said. "It was just like an explosion."
The similarities between the two deaths, Galbato said, extend beyond drunk driving accusations and the locations relative to the eatery. Both occurred in July: Carmella was killed on July 11, while Calhoun 鈥 a star outfielder for Auburn High School 鈥 died on July 27.
Both women died in their prime, Galbato said.
Galbato said he did not know Calhoun personally. The accident happened after she had finished a round of golf at Tom Thumb's newly opened miniature golf course.
In honor of her memory, the mini-golf course's 18th hole will be dedicated to Calhoun with a plaque in the near future.

Schneider's DWI charge was elevated to a felony due to past drunk driving convictions. Though Galbato said he has long advocated to lower East Lake Road's speed limit of 55 mph, he does not believe that would have helped in this case.
He said CARM has worked to encourage better judgement when intoxicated 鈥 but for individuals with longer histories of alcohol abuse, more is needed for change beyond increased awareness.
"We can never reach the alcoholics unless they feel themselves that they have a problem," Galbato said.
