One man is dead and another has been arrested after a shooting in Auburn Saturday night.
The Auburn Police Department said in a news release that officers were checking on a "large block style party" near Oak Creek Townhomes at about 9:40 that night when they heard multiple gunshots from Chapman Avenue. One man was found with a handgun, police said, while another was lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
The man with the gun, identified as Davon M. Dixon, threw the handgun to the ground when ordered by officers, police said. He was then taken into custody. Officers, along with Auburn City Ambulance and the Auburn Fire Department, administered aid to the victim, who was transported to Auburn Community Hospital. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, police said.
Dixon, 35, of Cottage Street in Auburn, was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is the first person to be charged with murder in Auburn since August 2022.
Auburn police said the identity of the victim is not being released at this time until family members are notified.
The department was assisted by the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, the Cayuga County District Attorney's Office, the New York State Police and the Cayuga County Coroner's Office. The involvement of other law enforcement agencies was due to the large number of people at Chapman Avenue and the hospital, police said.
