Sectionals are wrapping up this week, and most athletes in the Cayuga County area saw their seasons end sooner than they had hoped.Ìý
Still, several local athletes gave it all they had, whether it was pushing themselves in individual competition or providing a spark to their teams in the postseason.
Here are 10 Cayuga County-area athletes with standout performances during sectionals:
Softball: Paityn Delaney, Union Springs
Delaney opened sectional play for the Wolves with a 16-strikeout performance on the mound in a complete game against Southern Cayuga at home. She then helped secure Union Springs softball’s first Section IV, Class C title by allowing just two hits and one walk in a 16-1 win over Tioga. Now competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Softball Championships, Delaney and company look to continue their success in the quarterfinals on Saturday when they take on Sandy Creek at Onondaga Community College.

Though the Panthers eventually fell to No. 1 Sandy Creek in the Section III, Class C semifinals, Jump had some of her best performances on the mound during the postseason. She struck out 13 batters while allowing one earned run and two hits in a complete game against West Canada Valley. Facing Thousand Islands in the quarterfinals, Jump surrendered two hits and zero earned runs while striking out nine.Ìý

Pitching in both of the Eagles’ sectional appearances, the sophomore hurler struck out 21 batters in 15 innings. Thirteen of those strikeouts came in Jordan-Elbridge’s 1-0 loss to Cazenovia at home in the Section III, Class B quarterfinals. DelFavero also surrendered a combined five hits and three runs over the two outings. She strengthened her cause at the plate with three hits in a win versus Adirondack and two hits against Cazenovia.Ìý

Culver posted a career-best 3 under par (69) and was a medalist at The College Golf Course at Delhi, where the Wolves captured the Section IV, Class D title on May 20. He then finished with a score of 82 two days later when Union Springs captured the Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship at Soaring Eagles Golf Course. As a result of his sophomore sectional performance, Culver will take part in the NYSPHSAA boys golf championships at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira on Sunday and Monday.Ìý

Competing at the Section IV, Class C finals in Sidney on May 22, Walker placed first in the 400-meter dash. To take the victory, he set a Blue Devils record in the event with a time of 50.4. Six days prior, at the IAC championships, Walker finished first in the 200-meter dash and set the school record in the long jump (20 feet, 10.75 inches) as the boys placed third overall.

It’s been quite the postseason for Rossbach. Participating in the IAC pentathlon, she ended in the top spot with a Southern Cayuga record of 2,644. Rossbach also took first place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.49) and second in the 200-meter hurdles, setting a school record in the latter with a time of 16.57. Due to the junior’s success on the track, she earned a spot at the state qualifiers.

In the Maroons’ first matchup of the Section III, Class AA tournament, they seemed to have an uphill battle as they matched up with No. 2 Whitesboro. Behind an offense and defense that were synced all game, Auburn came away with a 12-0 upset victory. In the win, DeAngelis had two hits, one RBI, one walk and one run. The Maroons' sectional run eventually came to an end in the semifinals, but DeAngelis left it all on the field, racking up three hits, one RBI, one hit and one stolen base against the Warriors.

Striking out seven batters in the Section IV, Class C quarterfinals against Newfield at home, Brown helped propel the Wolves to a 12-2 victory. In four innings on the bump, Brown surrendered one earned run, two hits and three walks. At the dish, Brown added two RBIs, one run, one hit and one walk.Ìý
Boys lacrosse: Landen Brunelle, SkaneatelesÌý
Brunelle totaled 31 points across the Lakers’ six-game winning streak to close the regular season. Carrying that momentum into sectionals, the sophomore contributed five goals and two assists in Skaneateles' 19-4 win in the Section III, Class D quarterfinals against Tully. In the Lakers’ final game of the season, Brunelle finished with two goals and one assist in a loss to Westhill in the semifinals.Ìý
Girls lacrosse: Grace Marquardt, SkaneatelesÌý
While the Skaneateles boys may have ridden a six-game win streak into the postseason, the girls doubled that total with a 12-game streak of their own. Leading the Lakers in scoring during the regular season, Marquardt opened sectionals with three goals and six assists in a 19-4 win against Clinton. The eighth grader then closed out the season with two goals and one assist as the Lakers also fell to Westhill in the Section III, Class D semifinals.Ìý
