Congressman John Mannion, a Democrat who represents central New York, used expletives while yelling at Republican Congressman Mike Lawler, also from New York, on the House floor.
U.S. Rep. John Mannion shouted expletives at Republican Congressman Mike Lawler, telling his fellow New Yorker to "get some f--king balls" during an incident on the House floor Thursday.
C-SPAN's cameras caught Mannion's comments during a vote. Reporters who were in the chamber said Lawler was on the Democratic side when Mannion, D-Geddes, launched into his expletive-laden remarks.
Mannion, who represents the city of Auburn and the southern portion of Cayuga County, could be heard saying, "F--king stop it, Lawler. This is f--king madness, man. We've had enough. F--king get over there and get some f--king balls! Tell them."
At that point, the House chamber 鈥 usually a bustling place during a vote 鈥 hushed as members and staff directed their attention to Mannion. Lawler's response could not be heard on video, but Mannion said, "You know who I am. I'm from New York just like you. The country is falling apart."
"I'm a kid from Tipp Hill that's fighting for my hometown and my country," he said. "I'm giving everything I have to stop the rise of authoritarian government and the destruction of American democracy. If making some noise on the House floor and calling out Trump enablers draws attention to what's happening to our country right before our eyes 鈥 good."
Lawler 聽by calling Mannion unhinged. He described the incident as "a shameful display that exposed (Mannion's) complete lack of temperament." He also mentioned the allegations made by former staffers who claimed Mannion harassed and mistreated them.
"He should go seek help for anger management 鈥 and f--k off," Lawler said.
The exchange between Lawler and Mannion occurred after U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference. Mannion mentioned that incident in his statement, as well as the Trump administration's mobilization of the Marine Corps and National Guard to counter immigration protests in California.
Mannion criticized Republicans for their "gross fealty to a want-to-be dictator who is tearing the country apart."
"None of this is normal or okay," he said. "I'm always going to stand up and speak out and fight for the people of this country."
