In a Thursday news release, the DEC announced that it and the Department of State have approved a聽聽for the lake.聽
DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said the plan will help state and local governments work together more closely to address concerns about water quality in the lake, which provides drinking water for more than 150,000 people in Syracuse, Skaneateles and other towns in Onondaga County.
鈥淧rotecting and improving water quality is a core DEC mission and we celebrate the release of this plan,鈥 Lefton said.

鈥(The) plan builds on decades of efforts made by state and local partners to maintain excellent water quality within the lake.鈥
Skaneateles Town Supervisor Chris Legg said the plan 鈥渇acilitates our continued coordinated actions on the land and the water to promote a healthy Skaneateles Lake for all.鈥澛犅
The plan recommends a plethora of actions to stop phosphorus from reaching the lake, which often happens due to stormwater runoff and inadequate septic systems. Levels of the element are low in Skaneateles Lake, the DEC said, but they can still contribute to algae growth. To that end, the聽聽recommends聽increasing the number of inspections on residential septic systems, scaling back the amount of phosphorus farmers apply to their crops by 10%, implementing filter strips across the watershed and reinforcing river and streambanks.聽
The plan's approval comes as concerns about harmful algal blooms continue in the Finger Lakes. Last year was one of the worst years for blooms yet, according to DEC data.
While municipalities have been upgrading their drinking water treatment systems since bloom toxins began appearing in the water in the late 2010s, state Commissioner of Health James McDonald believes the 9E plan provides those 150,000 people "peace of mind" that their drinking water will be "protected from pollution for years to come."
The 9E plan aligns with a 2018 DEC initiative, the , that was made in response to the blooms in 2017.聽
The DEC said implementing the plan is estimated to cost in the millions, but did not respond to a request for a more specific cost by 人兽性交. Funding for the plan comes from the and state Clean Water Infrastructure Act, which Gov. Kathy Hochul said will invest $42 million into the eastern Finger Lakes.
A 9E plan for Owasco Lake was approved in 2022.
A judge has sided with the city of Auburn and town of Owasco in their lawsuit against the state over Owasco Lake watershed rules and regulations.
